‘Ballad of Dog’s Beach’ is a Portuguese cult-film of the 1980’s, which created big waves for its story, theme, style and political connotations, that still resonate today. The film is set in the 1960’s, during the dictatorship regime in Portugal. The story opens on an arresting note, when the corpse of a brutally murdered soldier is found on Dog’s Beach. Inspector Elia is assigned the task of uncovering this death, which takes him into a world of love, passion, tension, political intrigues.
The dead soldier turns out to be Major Luis Dantas, a political revolutionary who had been placed in a military prison, but escapes. He takes refuge in an abandoned house and is joined by two other insurgents. Tensions and complications arise, when the beautiful girl who stays in the neighborhood, discovers them, and begins to start a torrid affair with Dantas. However, she soon finds herself attracting the attention of the other two soldiers too. It is a ménage trois, that is complex and dangerous, and someone has to pay a price for it.
The film created waves in Portugal and overseas. It was also the recipient of many honors and awards.
